Soul chooses its new life
Karma
Karma is a list of good and bad deeds we've done over our past lives. Good deeds would include things like helping others, taking care of people and animals. Bad deeds include, stealing, hurting, killing and any other nasty things we can inflict on others. The ‘pebbles’ represent significant events, and the row of pebbles represent a life or possibly a series of lives. As we are preparing to start our next physical life time is spent as soul chooses the events that need further work or development. We usually have someone to guide us, like an inner guide or angel. There are also the Lords of Karma who keep tabs on all our karma. They have the list of our good and bad deeds. They will often hand out a selection of karma which gets included in our new life whether we like it or not. If we have some awareness of the process we get to choose some of the events in our new life. So to some extent soul chooses our life. 
Our Destiny
This choice of events becomes our destiny in our new life. When we are born and up to the age of 5 or 6 some souls still have a clear connection to their inner worlds. You may hear a child speak of things from a previous life, or make statements like ‘When I was your mother’ or ‘When I was big I did…’. They still have a good recall of their previous life and why they are in their particular family. We loose this connection as we grow older because we are educated to deal with the physical world and our inner worlds are ignored. We can reestablish our connection with our inner worlds through spiritual exercises like contemplation and meditation. You still live the life you choose even if you have forgotten your choices.
